Why Not Now: Strengthening My Relationship with Jesus - Wednesday

Luke 10:40
But Martha was distracted by all the preparations that had to be made. She came to him and asked, “Lord, don’t you care that my sister has left me to do the work by myself? Tell her to help me!” (NIV)

Today’s message is the one this week I don’t want to write. I don’t want to write it because I operate just like Martha. Luke, the writer, says that Martha was “distracted by all the preparations.” Martha appears to be a list maker, a doer, and an accomplisher of tasks. She seems to be willing to organize and lead a big job like feeding her household, along with Jesus, His disciples, and any others that were along for the ride that day.

I have a list in my head at all times. This list also has due dates and times. That’s not to mention the list of tasks on my phone or the one on my work computer. Of course, when these tasks are complete, they beget even more tasks! I’d like to meet Martha in heaven because I have a sense we’d have a lot in common and get a lot done.

I’ll leave Jesus’ response to Martha’s demands until tomorrow, but for today, let’s ask ourselves about one key word in this text. What gets you distracted from your relationship with Jesus? What clouds your view of Him? What interrupts your conversations with Him? What drowns out Jesus’ voice? What crowds out time with Him?

Whether you are a list maker or not, one thing we all need to do is remove or reprioritize the things in life that keep us from Jesus. That’s an easy sentence to write but a hard one to live. But the truth is, when we get this right, everything else in life falls into place.

Wednesday’s Reflection

Make a list of three to five things you have to do today. Then, put “spending time with Jesus” at the top of that list. Now, go do it.
