Why Not Now: Strengthening My Relationship with Jesus - Tuesday
Luke 10:39
She had a sister called Mary, who sat at the Lord’s feet listening to what he said. (NIV)
We know from yesterday that “she” in the verse above is Martha. Martha invited Jesus into her home, but Mary seems to have invited Him into her heart. The scene is set with Mary listening intently at the feet of Jesus. While I’ve not literally sat at the feet of many teachers in my life, I’ve figuratively been there many times. I can’t imagine what an honor it would be to sit at the feet of Jesus and soak it all in. I’m officially jealous of Mary.
Today, I want to share two observations from this verse with you. The first is how Mary sees Jesus. It’s clear He has her attention. She takes a seat right in front of Jesus and locks in on what the Teacher has to say. Her relationship with Jesus is demonstrated by her posture. She’s sitting humbly at His feet taking in every word. I want to be like Mary. She challenges me.
The second observation I have is based on the historical and cultural context of this passage. Women in the first century in this part of the world were not seen as equals to men—not even close. As shocking as it sounds today, it’d be surprising to see a rabbi or his disciples allow a woman a front-row seat to Jesus’ teaching. Jesus is categorically different. He gives full and free access to Mary the way a caring friend would. This action is in itself a profound statement.
Jesus and Mary are friends. It’s clear throughout the gospels that she listens to Him, and it’s also clear He cares for her. Jesus cares for you, too. He wants your attention and your friendship. Jesus both loves and likes you. As we continue to make the changes we need to make this week in this most important relationship we have, let’s learn from Mary together.
Tuesday’s Reflection
Take some time to give Jesus your full attention, and allow Him to befriend you like He did Mary.
