Why Not Now: Prioritizing My Relationship with the Church - Wednesday

Psalm 63:1
O God, you are my God; I earnestly search for you. My soul thirsts for you; my whole body longs for you in this parched and weary land where there is no water. (NLT)

David wrote Psalm 63 while in the wilderness, potentially as a result of his own son’s rebellion against him, or while waiting for the Lord’s plan for his life to start. Either way, David was in a situation where the land certainly could feel parched and weary for various reasons.

Parched and weary… When I read this psalm, I can’t think of a better descriptor of the world right now. People are craving purpose, truth, love, and a life with growth and prosperity, among many other things. People who are desperate for these things are becoming very aware of the “God-shaped hole in their life,” but unfortunately, many of them are so resistant to Jesus that they’re more willing to put faith in positive affirmations, zodiac signs, self-help books, and themselves to try to quench their thirst. I’m aware that I, too, have crevices in my life that I haven’t surrendered to Him—areas I prefer to rely on myself to control, like finances. And I’m also thoroughly aware that these areas are pretty stagnant and certainly aren’t thriving like the areas I have surrendered to the Lord. With that in mind, I can’t imagine what it would be like to believe you are your own best option for providing purpose to your life.

Boy am I glad we have a God to fill the void in our lives that He belongs in. Living with Jesus means learning what He says, living like He has your best interest at heart, and allowing that commitment to a life with Him overflow into your words and actions, spilling out living water on the parched and weary people in your life. And the relief they experience from your overflow will make them start to wonder if Jesus just might be what’s missing in their life.

We have a lot of ways to intentionally pursue living with Jesus at Southland—here’s a few to get you started:
