Why Not Now: Prioritizing My Relationship with the Church - Thursday

Galatians 6:2-3
Share each other’s burdens, and in this way obey the law of Christ. If you think you are too important to help someone, you are only fooling yourself. You are not that important. (NLT)

Back when I was a kid, I remember numerous times where we were out playing or riding bikes, and other kids just showed up and joined right in. Or we’d be working on something with my parents outside, and they’d roll up on their bikes and ask us to go play or ride bikes with them. School was similar in that proximity allowed for ease of conversation and planning, and then structured events like football games on Fridays allowed for consistent community and friendships with minimal effort.

As I’ve gotten older, community has become more difficult to find. Sure, I know a lot of people that I see every day at work or the gym or other places that I frequent, and I can strike up conversations with them. But intentional, prioritized conversation these days is mostly limited to my wife and dog, and my conversations with my dog are usually pretty one-sided. My wife Leah is great! We can talk about anything, and I’m immensely grateful for the conversations we have, but having community beyond just the two of us is something we both know we need.

I think we can all acknowledge that a group of people willing to hold us accountable, help us when we are in need, and steer us in the right direction in our faith and life is invaluable and really endearing. That’s why the second part of the triangle here at Southland is living In Community.

If you’re looking to start on the path towards godly community in your life, or to help others looking for that kind of community, here are some opportunities here at Southland to do just that:

  • Join or lead a group: Our groups are made up of people just like you, looking to do life together and take an iron-sharpening-iron approach.

  • Get Involved: Community naturally forms when we are pursuing goals alongside other people. Volunteering, attending events, and worshiping together puts us in a prime position to meet people with similar goals in their lives.

Thursday’s Reflection

How is the community in your life? How are you being challenged to grow by the people around you, and can you improve that by getting involved here at Southland?
