Student Celebration Weekend - Tuesday
1 Corinthians 3:6-7
"I planted the seed, Apollos watered it, but God has been making it grow. So neither the one who plants nor the one who waters is anything, but only God, who makes things grow." (NIV)
Last week, I assisted in a transplant operation.
Not of a heart, or kidney, or some other vital organ…it was a houseplant.
For weeks, a friend of mine had wanted to move his office plant from a smaller pot to a bigger one. So I suggested, “Why not do it today”. The whole “operation” took only a few minutes and thanks to my surgical first assistant Caitlin, I think our patient will make a full recovery!
I’m no “green thumb”, but my mom is the definition of one. She has a passion for flowers and plants and an incredible talent for gardening. Whether it's from growing up on a farm or learned through years of experience, she’s developed a real skill!
What my mom understands about soil, seeds, and sunlight parallels in our spiritual growth.
We all come from different environments that have impacted our hearts for better or worse, but no matter what the condition of our heart’s “soil” is, God can transform it so that fruit is able to grow. However, there must be people willing to sow seeds and water them, especially for our children and students.
God has designed the local church to be multi-generational for this exact reason. Some plant, some water, but God makes things grow. While the growth is not always immediately visible, it’s clear, God is inviting us into the process with Him.
Think of prayer as watering a seed. Let’s start by committing the next 4 days to pray for the children, students, and young adults of our church. Start by thanking God that they are here and that we have an opportunity to serve them.
We as a church don’t want to wait until they’re older—we want to invest in what God is doing in their lives right now.
Tuesday’s Reflection
How could you begin investing? A great way to start is by learning more about our Children, Student, or Young Adult ministries and the ways to get involved. Will you pray for each of them today?
