Student Celebration Weekend - Monday

Psalm 90:12
Teach us to number our days, that we may gain a heart of wisdom. (NIV)

Today’s verse tells us to number our days and on Sunday, Connor did just that. His number was 11,363. Today mine is 13,060, that’s right, I’m 35.

In some circles, that’s still young, and in others, I’m getting old. Age—it turns out—is a funny thing.

Comedian George Carlin said it best, “You BECOME 21, even the words sound like a ceremony—you become 21! YES! But then you TURN 30. Ohh what happened? Makes you sound like bad milk, he turned, we had to throw him out. There’s no fun now. Next you’re PUSHING 40, you REACH 50, you MAKE IT to 60, and by then you’ve built up so much speed, you HIT 70!”

From nose jobs to hair restoration and skin resurfacing, our society tries a lot of things seeking to turn back the ol’ clock. There are gizmos, gadgets, and potions galore promising the fountain of youth.

My age is a number that describes something about me…but as Connor reminded us, “Your number of days is not the most significant thing…it’s the way you choose to live those days that has incredible significance.”

This summer I got to go on Beach Week with our high schoolers to Myrtle Beach. I led a group of incoming freshmen guys. Our conversations started slow and surface-level, as expected, but as each day went on the talk became more meaningful. Conversations about things in the Bible, about friendships, about purpose, and about what it means to follow Jesus.

Want to know what will keep you young? Care less about grey hairs and wrinkles, and more about encouraging and equipping the younger generations around you. The church at its best teaches each generation to do that. That’s what we’re going to explore this week.

Monday’s Reflection

So what’s your number? How many days have you been alive? Turn that number into a prayer with God. Ask Him to teach you to make your days count. Open your imagination on how you can use your days to strategically serve those younger than you.
