Today’s Verse

2 Timothy 3:14-15

But as for you, continue in what you have learned and have firmly believed, knowing from whom you learned it and how from childhood you have been acquainted with the sacred writings, which are able to make you wise for salvation through faith in Christ Jesus. (ESV)

In the last year or so, I’ve watched a few documentaries about cults. Each of them features a charismatic leader with a quasi-utopian vision for the world, who convinces a small group of people to follow their philosophy and teachings. Cults based in America usually roam around out west somewhere and languish about as a warped worldview promising a better life, but culminating in chaos, tragedy, broken lives, shattered dreams, and even physical death.

Each time I watch these stories unfold, I’m struck by how far people disconnect from reality. The sacred writings Timothy learned from boyhood, the ones that made him wise for salvation, pointed him to Jesus. The sacred writings Timothy learned were what we call the Old Testament. From Genesis to Malachi, the entire Old Testament unveils God's plan to save people through Jesus. When we put our faith in Jesus, we gain salvation and become correctly grounded in reality.

On Sunday, Scott reminded us that 2020 revealed many people’s worldviews. It became apparent during that time who and what people trusted and where they placed their faith. The reason we prioritize the sacred writings of the Bible is that we want to see the world the way Jesus sees the world and love the world the way Jesus loves the world. Our faith in Him grounds us firmly in truth and reality.

Jesus was promised in the Old Testament, and then his life was displayed in the New Testament. The New Testament goes on to share about his life, death, burial, and resurrection. From there, we learn about His bride, the Church, and how his chosen people must live in light of life on Earth, Heaven, Hell, and why we are here today. While our journey is a challenging one, it climaxes in restoration, beauty, and a full life experienced now and into eternity.
