The Bible - Wednesday

Today’s Verse

2 Timothy 3:16-17

All Scripture is breathed out by God and profitable for teaching, for reproof, for correction, and for training in righteousness, that the man of God may be complete, equipped for every good work. (ESV)

It’s hard to remember back this far, but there used to be commercials for more than just prescription drugs and insurance. Even something as niche as chewing gum and mints had national advertising campaigns. Fresh breath was big business, and if you search YouTube, you can find some classics replete with bright colors and catchy jingles.

In Genesis 2, it’s the very breath of God that fills man’s lungs and gives him life. God’s breath brought man to life and inspired the Words of Scripture that instruct us in every aspect of life. Paul is careful to remind his son in the faith, Timothy, that Scripture comes from the Almighty, and thus, it can be trusted and applied to life. Timothy doesn’t have to guess about Truth, reality, or how to lead those entrusted to his spiritual care; he can rely on Scripture to equip him for the work.

It’s no surprise that in every lifetime since the Bible arrived on the scene and was canonized, it has come under attack. Back in Genesis, not long after God put his life-giving breath into the lungs of Adam and Eve, Satan came on the scene. He asked Adam and Eve a question meant to undermine God’s very words. What did Satan ask to move Adam and Eve away from God’s will and blessings? He asked them, “Did God actually say…?”

To this day, all manner of atheists, deists, scoffers, skeptics, and people posing as Christians have asked, “Did God actually say…?” Most recently, God’s design for his gift of marriage and sex has come under Satan’s deceptive questioning. Many people have recently tried to ignore, change, “reimagine,” “rethink,” and otherwise intentionally lead people away from the simple truth that God designed sex to reside as a blessing inside the covenant marriage relationship of one man and one woman. Everything else is sin; yet, Satan still asks people, “Did God actually say…?” as a means of leading them away from God and down a path of destruction and death.

APPLICATION

Today, take a deep breath into your lungs and then breathe it out. Thank God for the life he has given us and the truth of His Word, which guides us every day.

PRAYER

Father, thank you for giving us your Word. Thank you that we don’t have to guess; we can know you and understand your best intentions for us.
