Today’s Verse

Colossians 1:15a

Christ is the visible image of the invisible God. (NLT)

Paul wrote these profound words to a church in a city called Colossae. This church was living in a culture not too different from our own, as there were many false beliefs about God being thrown around—some of those false beliefs came from within the church, and others came from outside of the church. But regardless of where these false beliefs came from, each devalued Jesus as our unrivaled Lord and Savior.

This is important context for us to know, as it reveals the extreme significance of Paul’s opening statement to the church in Colossae. After Paul’s usual greetings, “Hey, hi, how are you?”s, and introductions, his very first words to the church in Colossae point them to the supreme Lordship of Jesus, revealing that Jesus is our visible image of the invisible God, whom we serve and follow. Meaning, if we want to know what God the Father is like, we need look no further than Jesus Himself.

Jesus fully embodied and clearly revealed the heart and mind of God the Father.

Don’t miss this… As the church in Colossae was actively trying to navigate false teachings about who God is and what God is like, Paul instructed them to look at Jesus, because Jesus is our visible image of the invisible God. He showed us what God the Father is like in the way that Jesus lived, laughed, and loved.

This is important for us today! Two thousand years removed from the visible image of the invisible God, we too find ourselves picking up puzzle pieces that do not fit in the picture of what God is like. We, too, find ourselves susceptible to false ideas of what God the Father is like. And it is important that we have a good idea of what God is like, so that we can live our lives looking like Him to others.

REFLECTION

Pastor, author, and notable faith mentor A.W. Tozer once put it this way, “The most important thing about you is what comes to your mind when you think about God.”

So, what comes to your mind when you think about God? Are those ideas and images that come to your mind true of God? There is only one way to know…

Look at Jesus. Study His life in the Gospels. Ask yourself, how did He live? Who did He love? And are you following suit?
