Undisputed — Over Creation - Tuesday
Today’s Verse
Colossians 1:17-18
He [Christ] existed before anything else, and he holds all creation together. Christ is also the head of the church, which is his body. He is the beginning, supreme over all who rise from the dead. So he is first in everything. (NLT)
When Paul wrote these words to the church in Colossae, it is clear that he really wanted them to understand this simple truth… Jesus is Lord over creation.
Knowing that, leads us to ask, “Why did Paul need to remind the church in Colossae of this truth?” In addition, we can also ask ourselves, “Do I need to be reminded of this truth, too?”
Not long ago, I went to visit a friend of mine’s art show. He is an incredibly talented artist and makes tons of captivating designs out of wood. This friend of mine spent several days camping in the woods, collecting imagery and inspiration to turn into works of art. All of these pieces were put on display in an art gallery, and I had the privilege of going to the exhibit alongside my good friend, whose art was on display.
What was so fascinating about this experience was that, as I looked at the art on display, I came up with many different interpretations and meanings of the art pieces, which were different from what the artist had in mind when he made the pieces. I would examine one art piece, come up with what I thought the meaning behind it was, only to realize I was “wrong” in my interpretation, as my friend explained the context of the art piece in front of me.
This happened because… only an artist knows the true intent of their art piece.
It is important for us to remember that Jesus is Lord over creation—just as it was important for the church in Colossae to remember of this—as it correctly positions our heart posture towards Jesus, for we, too, are a part of God’s creation.
See, sometimes, we look at the world around us and come up with ideas of what life is all about, and those ideas can be quite different from what The Artist had in mind. For only Jesus, the Lord over creation—the Creator God Himself, knows the true intent of His wonderful work of art. Put differently…
Only Jesus knows what is best for us—His creation.
But, God does not just know what is best for us, and leave us to figure it out on our own. No, God knows what is best for us, and He gave us Jesus to show us the way.
REFLECTION
How does this perspective impact your view of Jesus? Pray that God would open your heart to His intent for your life.
