Deconstruction: The Kitchen – Your Body Deserves Better - Tuesday

Today’s Verse

Romans 12:2

Do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewal of your mind, that by testing you may discern what is the will of God, what is good and acceptable and perfect. (ESV)

My husband and I are both above average height, but one of our kids falls a few inches below average. Even though her height is not something she can control, it was always her goal to be 5 feet tall. While she did grow to be 5'1", she has always been petite and we often tried to remind her that goals should be things she can control. All the trying and willpower and positive thinking in the world were not going to make her grow any taller than God created her to be!

There are lots of things that we can control in our lives, specifically in how we take care of our bodies. Usually, that process begins with our minds. We can't separate our body from our mind, nor did God intend us to. Immediately following what we read yesterday in Romans 12:1 about offering our bodies as a living sacrifice, verse 2 tells us to be transformed by the renewing of our minds. There is certainly a mental element to how we care for our bodies.

If you have ever tried to change your eating or exercise habits, you know that the first battle takes place in your thinking, long before you take action. We can try to change our habits, but if we haven't changed our thinking, it will be short-lived.

As a follower of Jesus, changing our thinking starts with our relationship with Him. We have to let His Word shape our thoughts and actions. Creating good habits and discipline in other areas of our lives like our exercise and eating habits. Learning how to take care of our bodies starts with a deeper understanding of the One who created our bodies and designed them for His glory!

REFLECTION

What habits or disciplines do you need to grow in? Where do you need to allow God to change your mind and thinking so that you can change your habits? You don't have to change everything at once, so list one or two areas that God is challenging you to grow in to care for your body.
