Humble Pie: Erasing the Lines — Wednesday
Matthew 28:19
Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit. (NIV)
When Jesus picked His 12 disciples, He chose ordinary men. It was like He was picking a kickball team full of kids who had never played kickball. It didn’t make sense. He didn’t choose the Pharisees to be His disciples, even though they were certainly the ones most equipped with knowledge of the scriptures. He instead chose 12 ordinary men to be His disciples, to learn from Him, and then to be entrusted with carrying out the good news of the gospel.
When I first started out in ministry, I felt like I didn’t belong. I didn’t go to Bible college, and I worried that I didn’t know enough to work in a church. But a friend reminded me that the disciples didn’t go to Bible college either. Among them were a few ordinary, uneducated fishermen and even a tax collector, a job that carried a very poor reputation in Jewish culture.
If you don’t feel worthy to partake in ministry, that’s the point—you’re not. And neither am I. Yet we are all called to take part in spreading the gospel. The Great Commission in today’s verse is for all of us—not just those who are in vocational ministry. Each and every one of us is in a unique position to reach people for the gospel at our workplace, in our neighborhood, on our team, in our club, and in our family.
Sharing the gospel is scary and often out of our comfort zone, yet we are clearly called to do it anyway. We have really, really good news to share with those around us. How can we selfishly keep it in?
Telling people about Jesus is scary. Tell them anyway.
Inviting others to church can be awkward. Invite them anyway.
Sharing your testimony requires immense vulnerability. Share it anyway.
Do the things God is asking you to do, even if they’re out of your comfort zone. Bravery exists in the presence of fear, not the absence of it. Be brave, push through fear, and go and make disciples.
Wednesday’s Reflection
Make a list of 3 people you know that don’t know Jesus. Commit to praying for them daily for the next week.
