The Rebel’s Guide – Serve An Imperfect Church - Thursday

Today’s Verse

Luke 14:12-14

Then Jesus said to his host, “When you give a luncheon or dinner, do not invite your friends, your brothers or sisters, your relatives, or your rich neighbors; if you do, they may invite you back and so you will be repaid. But when you give a banquet, invite the poor, the crippled, the lame, the blind, and you will be blessed. Although they cannot repay you, you will be repaid at the resurrection of the righteous.” (NIV)

Jesus knew that true greatness isn’t about seeking the spotlight or being first in line, but about humbling ourselves to serve others—especially those who have been marginalized or overlooked. He demonstrated this in His interactions with everyone from Pharisees to tax collectors, and He used these moments to teach profound lessons about humility, love, and service. In Luke 14:11, Jesus says, “For all those who exalt themselves will be humbled, and those who humble themselves will be exalted.” In this teaching, Jesus calls us to lift others up, especially those who may feel unnoticed by the world around them.

At Southland, we take this teaching to heart in many ways, especially through our Glow and Superstars ministries. These ministries create safe, welcoming environments where individuals with special needs experience community, worship, and grow closer to Jesus. Each person is unique, and our goal is to provide opportunities for everyone to know their value and purpose in Christ. Through these programs, we provide a specially tailored service where individuals with special needs are embraced and encouraged to grow in their faith.

Serving in these ministries isn’t about having previous experience or being perfect—it’s about showing up with a heart willing to serve those who may not always have their voice heard. If you’re looking for a meaningful way to serve, Glow and Superstars offer an incredible opportunity. Volunteering in these environments provides a unique opportunity to learn from individuals with special needs encourage a growing relationship with Jesus, build community, and live out the Gospel, no matter an individual’s abilities or challenges.

Whether you’re helping to lead worship or supporting individuals during service, your service in Glow and Superstars can make a difference in the lives of others, and your own. By humbling ourselves to serve, we offer the love of Christ in tangible ways, showing people that are valuable and belong in God’s family.

If you feel called to serve with Southland’s Special Needs ministry, we invite you to get involved with Glow and Superstars. Visit our southland.church/specialneeds for more information on how you can volunteer.

REFLECTION

Re-read Luke 14:12-14. Who can you invite to your table that might not typically come to mind? How can you love them well this week, even if “they cannot repay you”?
