In Case of Emergency – Stay Connected - Wednesday

Today’s Verse

Hebrews 10:25

And let us not neglect our meeting together, as some people do, but encourage one another, especially now that the day of his return is drawing near. (NLT)

Right now, the men’s group I am a part of is working through the book of Hebrews. We just began studying chapter 10 and I couldn’t help but notice some verses that I felt related to this week's devotional topic. Not only that, but I was perplexed by the parallelism of the context of this chapter of Hebrews to the current state of our country.

The author of Hebrews was aware that professing Christians were giving up on their faith and not gathering in worship with other believers anymore. Maybe it was persecution or hardship, maybe it was laziness or distraction; whatever the cause, Christians were giving up on meeting together.

Does that sound familiar? According to one study, average church attendance on a Sunday has dropped nearly 12% in the last two decades. I’m sure one could list a hundred reasons why this is, but this is wrong. I don’t mean statistically, I mean that it’s wrong for Christians to stop meeting together—just look back at Hebrews 10.

God designed us to be in community with other believers. Every member of the Church is essential and valuable. When the Church gathers, we give each other the gift of encouragement and help spur each other on to do good deeds and serve the Lord. That’s why it’s so important to make it a goal to attend church every Sunday. I understand that other things happen and life has a way of keeping us busy, trust me I get it. But what is more important than meeting together with other believers and lifting up the name of Jesus? I can’t think of anything!

REFLECTION

Maybe it’s been a while since you met with other believers, but can I challenge you to attend one of our Sunday services soon? We would love for you to gather together with us!
