Today’s Verse
1 Peter 3:8
Finally, all of you be like-minded and sympathetic, love one another, and be compassionate and humble (CSB)
It probably goes without saying, but everyone has an opinion about something. If you’re anything like me, you’re guilty of believing your opinion is always right.
I heard a story once about a professor who asked a grad student, “What’s your opinion on the current state of political discourse?” The grad student responded, “It’s terrible!” To which the professor replied, “Well, probably, but let’s hear it anyway.”
Did you get it? Personally, I thought it was funny, but that’s just my opinion (ha, get it?)… In all seriousness, it doesn’t take long to scroll through the internet and see the current state of divisiveness plaguing our country and our world. Someone asked me recently, “Do you know a good news source that doesn’t have any bias?” I politely replied, “I’m not sure that exists.” Unfortunately, the world teaches us to draw lines in the sand with people when they disagree with us, but as Christians, we are called to look different from the world.
I love how Peter encourages the church to be ‘like-minded.’ When you first read that, you might be tempted to believe Peter is telling the church to agree about everything—down to your favorite ice cream flavor. However, Peter encourages the church to find common ground through the Gospel of Jesus. Whatever matters the world wants us to be divided on are trivial matters. The Church, despite our differences and our vast array of opinions, can hold fast together and be united by the love and grace of Jesus.
REFLECTION
Deuteronomy 32:4 says, “The Rock - his work is perfect; all his ways are just. A faithful God, without bias, he is righteous and true.” (CSB). How does this verse inspire you to be united under God?
